Solo jazz performance / Wedding / August 2014

I just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU for playing at our wedding… The music was absolutely perfect and we know everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. Standing out in the beautiful courtyard with all our guests in the sunshine and you playing in the background is certainly an image we’ll never forget and helped to make our day so magical. We cannot thank you enough.

Jazz trio performance / Birthday party / March 2014

Just a quick note to thank you for helping to make my party on Saturday such a success. Everyone has been very complimentary about the evening and you have certainly gained a few more fans! Look forward to catching up with you again soon at another venue.

Many thanks for yesterday. I had very good feedback from our members.. especially by your explanations. It was great to see and hear you demonstrating the concept of chord progressions in jazz.. It was the clearest way I have ever had [jazz] explained to me. The beat poet/rap number using John Hendrick’s words was great and when I played the CD last night it seems even better the second time round.

Thank you to all involved in the band, the night was a hugely enjoyable and that’s largely due to the ambience, atmosphere and entertainment provided by you all. We’ve had so much feedback and so many glowing comments from our guests young and old, and the fact that the dance floor was packed all night is testament to such a great band! ..Robin, you were a pleasure to deal with at all times, made us feel special on the night, and we particularly appreciate your flexibility with timings.. Robin and Kirsty, thank you both so much in making the set list so perfect and fitting to our special day…

Cambridge Modern Jazz review / November 2013

Robin Phillips can justly be considered amongst the select group of British jazz singers who also play – in his case rich and resourceful piano. His mastery of vocalese, (using his voice as another instrument in the band,) places him way above the ranks of singer/pianists jostling to be heard and up there bopping with the best.

Thanks for a great night on Friday, you guys were fantastic – you’ve been friendly, professional and helpful, a real pleasure to work with. The stuff you played was atmospheric.. it did get a lot of people up on the dance floor!… Would definitely like to work with again in future.

Pinstripe Suit swing band performance / Ignite music series / Royal Albert Hall / August 2012

About a month ago I was fortunate to be at the Friday lunchtime concert at the above venue and I am writing to say how much I enjoyed the band’s (and your) performance. It really was a WOW event. It was amazing how, with such a small group, you managed to generate the swing and excitement of a top big band.

Robin P – iano – Duelling Pianos performance / Corporate Function / January 2012

Robin, what can I say… ?! Thank you so so much for coming to support our event last night – I can’t even call it a ‘gig’, it was a true performance! I know we have tried many times before to make this happen – it was totally worth the wait.

Lots of compliments that I wish you could be here to witness but, safe to say, YOU ROCK!!!

Hayley London

Robin Phillips Quartet performance / Wedding Reception / July 2012

I would like to start with a big thank you to Robin for organising a prior visit to the venue despite living so far… We had a lovely time and hope your experience was equally good!

We planned a very busy day and so unfortunately as a bride I missed out on much of the cocktail jazz! However, we had good reviews from our guests who felt it contributed to a classy ambience matching the grand backdrop of the galleries of One Marylebone London.

Later on, we very much enjoyed our entrance instrumentals and again felt the music created a fine evening atmosphere for our dinner. I wish we could have been closer to the band however, as I think we lost out on the true dinner jazz experience being seated as we had ourselves planned, in the centre of our guests.

…I think if I had a recommendation to future couples booking for a similar event it would be that to commence vocals as early as possible to avoid missing out on that experience and seat the bride and groom close to the band…I think those sitting closest to the band certainly had a closer experience though – and very lucky for them indeed!

…thank you again for playing so marvellously at our event and making it stress-free!

Millie London

Pinstripe Suit swing band performance / Wedding Reception / March 2012

The booking process was easy and painless… It was also good to use your word doc form as it made sure we thought about all the relevant points that needed to be thought about well in advance of the day. That helped us plan our day and meant that there were no last minute hiccups or stresses.

We had a magical time and thoroughly enjoyed having you guys play. We’ve had nothing but positive feedback from all the guests we’ve spoken to so, in terms of live wedding bands, it would seem as though you guys are amongst the best ones out there.

The song choices were spot on for encouraging as many people as possible to dance and it was great that it didn’t follow the usual format you get with a DJ where the “oldies” have a dance early on and then only the young ones are left to disco dance for the rest of the night. We thought that there was a good spread of people up and dancing all night which was just what we wanted…

…I don’t know if there were any last minute panics behind the scenes but, if there were, we didn’t hear about any of it so as far as I’m concerned you guys arrived, sound-checked and left without any fuss whatsoever which is definitely a good thing and a sign that you guys are professionals not just during performance time but before and after too.

We also hope you enjoyed yourselves!

Robin P – iano – Duelling Pianos performance / Swinging Pianos / March 2012

I performed duelling pianos with Robin in the Netherlands in March 2012 and found him a pleasure to work with. He is an accomplished jazz musician and plays with a high degree of technical skill.

His versatility behind the keys means he is able to field a wide range of requests from ‘serious’ music to ‘popular’ tunes. Vocally he can add harmony to his opposite number’s singing, as well as mixing things up with impressive scat-singing and rapping.

He is well versed in the art of performance and knows how to pace a show – building up and dropping the energy where appropriate to keep the audience interested. He will also engage and entertain the crowd by other means including playing personal dedications, dancing or getting in amongst them with his radio microphone.

Robin is a smart, well presented and entertainer who has a friendly and professional manner both towards the paying customer and his fellow performers and staff.

Robin Phillips – Jazz Singer/Pianist Performance / Wedding Reception / December 2011

Thank you so much to Robin who provided Jazz Solo Piano for us on our wedding day December 29th 2012. Sometimes it can be hard to describe what ‘feeling’ you want to create as you walk into a room – but as soon as we arrived at the drinks reception we realised it had been exactly achieved!

Robin did a truly wonderful job, he created a warm and friendly atmosphere and played some fantastic music, with a few very welcome vocal interludes. His music choices were just perfect as were the songs requested by us – all sensitively played at perfect volume for a drinks reception.

From the moment I spoke with Robin on the phone I knew I wanted him to be part of our special day. The time we spent discussing what would suit the style of our wedding was much appreciated. A fantastic level of service from a genuinely helpful person, who clearly has a lot of talent.

I would not hesitate in recommending Robin to anyone and indeed, look forward to listening to him again in the future.

Robin Phillips / Linked In Endorsement / November 2011

Robin is an integral part of the Duelling Pianos pianist rota. Robin is an accomplished pianist and singer, but what really makes him stand out is his ability to connect with an audience, and push the boundaries of what the audience expect to hear from a pianist. As such, Robin really is a top class musician and entertainer

Robin Phillips / Linked In Endorsement / October 2011

We hired Robin to perform during a cocktail reception at a large function earlier this year and he was fantastic. We received positive feedback from many of our guests who wanted to know where we had discovered him! We will definitely be hiring Robin again and have already recommended him to family, friends and at work for corporate functions.

Robin is one of the most pleasant, talented and hard working musicians it has been my pleasure to work with.

Contemporary, relavent, exciting and downright footstomping jazz is the world he lives in and one I hope to visit more often… I cannot recommend him highly enough and I very much look forward to the next time we can work together.

We just wanted to say that you and your band were fantastic and we really enjoyed it. We had a fantastic day and wanted to thank you for the large part that you played in that. Our friends and family enjoyed the music hugely.

So, a big thank you. And also for the disco, which again we really enjoyed.

Robin Phillips / Royal Exchange / July 2011

Robin, your performance at The Royal Exchange for the recent wedding I organised was simply marvellous, I have had countless comments of how great you where, whilst the way you interacted with the crowd was just what was needed for the occasion, thank you so much!

Robin Phillips / Corporate Function, The Dorchester / July 2010

On behalf of myself and my colleague Kirsty (and indeed the rest of the Social Committee!), we just wanted to thank you for providing some great music at our Summer Ball at The Dorchester. The music fitted really well during the Champagne reception as well as in the Ballroom and it was enjoyed by everyone. Like you said on the night, it was a good job that we had 2 keyboards (as you recommended) set up in the different rooms!

The booking process was professional and easy to do. Robin answered all our queries and was very helpful and friendly.

We recommend Robin Phillips and we will definitely keep him in mind should we need a musician(s) for future events.

Elsa London

Pinstripe Suit / Wedding Reception / May 2011

The band was one of the first things we looked to book when organising our wedding, and we chose Pinstripe Suit upon a recommendation from our venue. We knew that we didn’t want a disco and were looking for something extra special for our big day. We listened to the online demo and I immediately made up my mind that I wanted to book the band. My husband made me wait, wanting to have a look around to look at other bands, simply not wanting to book the first band I had found. Eventually, after looking at a few other bands, and after speaking to Robin on the phone, he let me make the booking and we never looked back.

The band were fantastic on the day and although I knew it would be great, it was even better than I expected. All our guests loved the music and we had most people up on the dance floor by the end of the night.

We are so pleased we booked the band and their performance really gave our wedding day the finishing touch.

All our guests remarked how wonderful it was to have such a great live band, and one guest even came up to me before we sat down for the meal and told me he had heard the sound check and knew the band would be fantastic from that alone.

We can honestly say that booking Pinstripe Suit was one of the best decisions we made for our day and would highly recommend them for any occasion.

All our requests were taken on board and throughout the whole process, Robin was very helpful with any queries we had. The band are absolutely fantastic, in terms of quality of performance and professionalism and one of my bridesmaids even commented that the man playing the trumpet was ‘the most beautiful man I have ever seen’.

If anyone has any question in their mind about booking this band, I would tell them that they will definitely not regret it and their event really will always be something their guests will remember for the right reasons.

Robin Phillips Trio plus guests / CD review, ‘Old Street, New Groove’ / April 2011

Robin Phillips is a full-time jazz pianist / vocalist who gigs most nights around the London area. This recording is the first under his own name and introduces us to that rare individual – the young vocalist who harks back to a golden age of vocalists. However, I’m sure he would be unhappy if my description implied that all he did was imitate the Harry Connicks and Peter Cincottis of the world. No, whilst the roots of his art are there and obvious to hear, he tries to bring something new to the genre. To my ears, all of his arrangements on the CD owe only a little to the originals – they all owe much to Robin Phillips.

On the tracks featuring the saxophone of Gareth Lumbers, there is a very funk-based style. Just One Of Those Things is unlike any well-known versions I have heard before, having phrasing that is totally new to me. Also on this track we hear some fine trumpet from Neil Penny. But Not For Me begins with a very formal, precise-sounding (almost like a show number) approach before breaking into a more laid-back swinger. Track 8 introduces the voice of Kirsty Jarvis, who collaborates professionally with Robin in the vocal duo ‘Kir Royal’. She has a lovely warm voice, perfectly suited to Fever. On track 10, It’s Probably Me, I was re-introduced to Sarah Ellen Hughes, whose CD, ‘Darning The Dream’, I was pleased to review in last July’s edition. I said then how much I enjoy Sarah’s work: I have not changed my mind. For me the best instrumental work on the CD is to be heard on My Foolish Heart, and this is particularly attributable to the impeccable flugelhorn of Tony Royle. A few words about Robin Phillips: his piano playing is an excellent foil to his own voice and fits well when playing ensemble. He plays an economic, clipped style, and this is particularly apposite to the role of accompanist. His singing is always relaxed, never rushed, and, as I said before, forever looking for something new to bring to the song…

…The CD is a refreshing glimpse of one of our better young vocalists.

Robin Phillips Trio / 30th Birthday / July 2010

Thank you so much for coming and playing at our do on Saturday.

You were brilliant – a real hit with everyone including the birthday boy! Please pass on my thanks to the rest of the group. I’ll definitely be using you all again!

[Your] response to initial enquiry was very prompt which was much appreciated [and] support was given in terms of thinking about what would be best for the event which was really appreciated. Considerable flexibility was shown around format, cost and allowing for a disco at the end which again was appreciated

[You were] very friendly in the build up to the event and on the night, which made for a very easy process and made everyone really enjoy having the band around – there were a lot of comments about how nice the band was!

[Your] music was great – we were impressed by the diversity of the group and their ability to play most songs on request! [You were also] very low maintenance i.e. all the kit including lights was brought so we had very little to do in the way of supporting the band

All in all, nothing but positive feedback to give!

Robin Phillips Trio / Summer Ball / June 2010

THANK YOU EVER SO MUCH for the most fantastic performance on Saturday. You always bring your A-Game, you absolutely ran the show, it sounded absolutely brilliant and you are such a showman!

Thanks Robin, see you soon!

Solo Performance / QC Appointment / April 2010

First of all, Robin was extremely efficient in dealing with the initial enquiry and after the booking had been confirmed, he responded promptly to all email correspondence which made the organisation of the event so much simpler.

On the night, Robin was prompt, attired suitably and impeccably, and polite. His solo playing was perfect for the occasion – a wide repertoire and at the right volume and style, and his singing later in the event sounded superb. There were many positive comments about his performance and I would recommend him for any similar event.

London

Pinstripe Suit / Wedding Reception / June 2010

After listening to and contacting a number of bands I finally came across Pinstripe Suit. On listening I knew they were the band for our wedding.

I received a call from Robin within hours of leaving an e-mail request. That’s what I call service. On speaking to him I knew we would be able to work together. His style is such that you feel in safe hands. He took time to listen to our needs as opposed to many other bands who were not prepared to do anything other than their standard play list. He even agreed to play a favourite song of ours that wasn’t within the band’s usual repertoire.

Robin kept in regular contact and made every effort to ensure that everything would be as we wanted it to be. Robin has an engaging, professional and inclusive style which made it easy to work with him and made us feel confident that we had made the right choice.

On the day of our wedding our guests couldn’t stop saying how fantastic the band was and that if they were having a party they would love to have them there. Of course the real test of how good the band was, is that our guests danced all night (even those that said they couldn’t or didn’t know how to).

Pinstripe suit created the upbeat party atmosphere that we wanted and it was great that they had a broad repertoire – from swing to more modern. Over all Pinstripe Suit delivered exactly what they said they would, which was great music with a fun approach.

I have no hesitation in recommending Pinstripe Suit for a wedding or any other event where you need a fantastic and thoroughly professional band.

Thank you Robin for a fantastic set. We loved the way you personalised the songs (once we realised!) and the way you interacted with the rest of the guests added to the intimacy of the event and made it really special. Thank you so much for playing at the wedding, your performance was wonderful, so full of joy, it was so so much fun. Your help and guidance before the wedding was priceless, it inspired confidence in Darren and I. It put our mind at ease knowing we were working with such a professional, lovely and approachable man.

Pinstripe Suit / Corporate Summer Party / July 2008

Pinstripe Suit performed one unplugged set with a trio and then a full-on set with all six musicians.

Their repertoire was very varied to suit the differing moods of our event and they all looked very professional and glamorous.

I would not hesitate to recommend them for any occasion. Their full set has as big a sound as a 12-piece and we all loved their performance. There’s nothing as good as live music!

Kir Royal Trio / Charity Ball / October 2008

Thank you for your performance at [our event]. It was fantastic, wonderful and many other superlatives! Everything we had wished for and more.

Professionally speaking, having done 15 of these events, I can say quite firmly that your performance made for the best evening session we have ever had!

Every year I have struggled to find the right vibe, but this year we got it so right. Everyone felt welcomed and warmed by your music and vocals, and the crowds quickly developed around you. I can’t really add more to that. Thank you….

…Personally speaking, it has been an absolute pleasure working with you. You are such a lovely, amiable bunch, I have honestly enjoyed every moment and your involvement with the ball has been easy and trouble free – we like this!…

…I hope that you enjoyed the event as much as we enjoyed having you there.

Thank you for joining us…You set the mood, and guests duly felt at ease and upbeat. The rest wrote itself.

Kir Royal Trio / Corporate Charity Function / February 2008

A Real Class Act.

They arrived with plenty of time to set up and were very flexible on their location and the timing of their performance.

We were all very impressed by their considerable musical and vocal talents and their performance displayed the chemistry that can only exist between gifted individuals who genuinely love working together.

Their professionalism also extended to making sure that the volume was perfectly in tune with the event.

In summary we would have no hesitation in inviting them to perform at any of our future events.

…I’d like to say a big thank you for such a fantastic performance at our wedding.

We had a wonderful time and the feedback is that everyone else did too. James never dances (seriously – I’ve never seen him dancing before!) but as you’ll remember he didn’t stop all night.

Please thank the rest of the Pinstripe Suits. If anyone asks for a recommendation, feel free to get in touch – we’d be happy to give one.

Robin Phillips (Various Ensembles) / Brasted’s

I have pleasure in recommending Robin Phillips and his team to any guests we may have here at Brasted’s, be it Robin playing the piano, a duo or his event band, Pinstripe Suit.

Robin and his team are what I call “venue friendly” i.e. they help make the day / evening run smoothly, great to work with and have the same goals as us here at Brasted’s: helping to meet the customers expectations at all times.

I met Robin just less than two years ago and he has developed his range considerably to cater for all events be it weddings, canapés receptions, birthdays or Christmas parties.

I look forward to working with Robin and his team in the near future and will carry on recommending him to our clients here at Brasted’s.

Robin, Kirsty and Vilem were wonderful!

The quality of the musicians was outstanding and Kirsty’s vocals were sublime. Added to this was the great enthusiasm and sense of fun that came across from all of the trio, in particular in the dynamic between Kirsty and Robin during the performances.

The selection of songs and music was excellent and gave the whole occasion an added air of class and enhanced everyone’s enjoyment of the evening.

We cannot thank you enough for the contribution you made to [the] wedding and for my wife and I your presence made our evening even more enjoyable…

Robin Phillips Duo / Product Launch / June 2008

…The launch was pitched to an invited audience. We needed a relaxed atmosphere, a classy scene, and complimentary music to fit the occasion. As guests needed to mingle and talk the music had to be engaging but not overpowering.

We had positive comments from guests throughout the evening and felt that Robin and [Vilem] got the balance just right.

Thanks for a brilliant night and look forward to using you again in the future.

…The background music at the start of the evening and during the meal was spot on and followed by the wonderful singing from Kirsty and Robin ensured that it was a night people will remember for some time to come.

On the back of this success I am sure the event will be repeated next year and if so I know there is only one band we will want to book. I do hope you will be available.
