Singers masterclass on Sunday 20th November where Anita and Robin will share tips and tricks learned over decades of jazz performance, as well as look at how singers can take more control in performances and become part of the band. Participants will also be able to try out these skills with the same trio that will be performing on the following evening.

Anita Wardell received the prestigious BBC Jazz Award for Best of Jazz category in 2006 and a British Jazz award for Best Vocalist in 2013. Her singing is exciting and breathtaking; she is noted for her mesmerizing and captivating vocal improvisations and vocalese lyrics to instrumental solos. Anita is a musician who uses the voice as her instrument, displaying precision and agility, mixed with heartfelt emotion.

Cambridgeshire-based Robin Phillips is emerging as a major player amongst the UK’s new generation of jazz singer / pianists, whose passionate performances are as informative as they are engaging and entertaining. Robin’s energetic trio definitely hark back to a golden age of jazz, but their arrangements have a distinctly modern edge.
Robin and Anita were first brought together when she appeared on his 2014 ‘Sing. Play.. for Pleasure’ album and the accompanying video. They share a mutual love for jazz singing as an art-form but also for really understanding where a song is coming from and communicating this with the audience.
At the Cambridge Jazz Festival Anita will perform with the Robin Phillips Trio, both taking turns to share their latest and favourite arrangements as well as performing songs together.
Anita Wardell:
“2013 British Jazz Award winner Anita Wardell, is noted for her mesmerizing and captivating vocal improvisations and vocalese lyrics to instrumental solos. Anita is a musician who sings. Her newest release “The Road” showcases Anita’s agility and precision through a voice that soars like a finely tuned instrument. Pianist and long time collaborator Robin Aspland’s inventive re-workings of standards such as “You’re My Thrill,” “Surrey With The Fringe On Top” and “Without A Song” leave room for some exciting and swinging improvisations – whilst Stevie Wonder’s “Superwoman,” Bobby Hutcherson’s “Mirrors” and Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays’ “Travels” show a more contemporary side of Wardell”.
Robin Phillips:
“a voyage of discovery through an exemplary execution of jazz standards… he brings an effortless deftness to each of the songs chosen, sounding at times just like Chet Baker or Mose Allison…”, LondonJazz album review 2014
“one of the capital’s leading jazz singer / pianists”, The Musician magazine 2014
“Well Done, Well Sung!.. You show great taste and discretion in this entire compilation…”, Jon Hendricks (jazz singing legend), 2014
“the hardworkin’est, boppin’est band around..piano-led jazz with an edge.. a powerful [band] with talent to spare.” Cambridge Modern Jazz, 2013
received the prestigious BBC Jazz Award for Best of Jazz category in 2006 and a British Jazz award for Best Vocalist in 2013. This, coupled with the release of The Road has propelled Anita into the major artist arena. She has guested on many local and international recordings.
